Relentless: Create the Mindset for Success

“It’s about being relentless in the pursuit of your goal and resilient in the face of adversity.”

— Nick Saban

If you learn to create the mindset for success, then you will understand what it means to be relentless. Not relentless in a negative, uncaring, harsh way; but relentless in the sense of having clarity of purpose NEVER giving up no matter what obstacles come your way.

There’s a moment in the film “The Pursuit of Happyness” that captures the meaning of being relentless. Chris Gardner, played by Will Smith, makes a statement to his son during a moment of despair:

“Hey. Don’t ever let somebody tell you… You can’t do something. Not even me. All right?
“You got a dream… You gotta protect it. People can’t do somethin’ themselves, they wanna tell you you can’t do it. If you want somethin’, go get it. Period.”

Captured in that brief but powerful dialogue is the reality of what it means to be relentless — to be relentless means to be persistent.

Here’s a sobering thought: To achieve success in today’s world, you must have unwavering focus in your pursuit of it because life will not reward those who fail to make the sacrifice to achieve it.

A characteristic of being relentless means you learn the art of managing your emotions to overcome major obstacles on the road to achieving your goals.

“Relentless, repetitive self-talk is what changes our self-image.”

— Denis Waitley

Being Relentless is NOT Adopting a Cruel, Harsh Attitude

In the dictionary definition of relentless some adjectives used to describe the word are: harsh, cruel, remorseless, merciless, ruthless, heartless, unforgiving.

The purpose of this blog post is NOT to encourage these behaviors toward people. I would NEVER encourage anyone to act harsh, cruel, remorseless, etc. toward ANYONE.

The purpose of this blog post is to make clear that you must be “relentless” toward the pursuit of your goals in the sense that when obstacles stand between you and your worthy goals, you find a way to overcome the obstacles.

Either you go around it, through it, above it, underneath it, separate it in parts or completely remove it – but you FIND A WAY to reach your goals in an ethical, honest manner. That’s what being relentless means.

You do NOT, scheme, hurt, defraud, lie, cheat or steal or do anything that encroaches on the lives of your fellow man. Individuals who behave unethically should never have the respect of their peers or of society.

Being relentless simply means finding a way when there seems to be no way. Finding a way when all available options seem to vanish. Not giving up in the face of overwhelming odds. It means moving forward as you take full responsibility for the decisions you’ve made.

What I am referring to when it comes to being “relentless” is the persistent pursuit of excellence. A fierce desire fueled by the determination to prosper.

At this point, let us define success: Success may be summed up as the ability to follow well-thought-out plans while making adjustments along the way.

Success is NOT the end result, as so many people mistakenly believe. Success is the journey, the process of achieving your goals.

Those who are relentless rise above their difficulties instead of being overwhelmed by them. If you learn to develop a iron-willed resolve, nothing can stand in your way to achieve success.

“Whatever you want out of life, you must go through a process to get it. The process will take time, energy, determination, sacrifice, and relentless focus. If you want it enough, you’ll find a way to get it done.”

To Be Relentless You Must Think Big and Act Big

To be relentless demands patience, because events in your life will seldom happen the way you expect. The persistent person never allows overwhelm to get a foothold into their mind.

The relentless person cultivates a growth mindset – learning and growing are always a daily priority. By having a growth mindset they avoid a narrow vision of their future in favor of personal growth and development.

Relentless people never give in to obstacles – even overwhelming ones. They look at obstacles as positive feedback that leads to more self-improvement.

In order to have this mindset, you MUST FEED YOUR MIND. No one is born with a desire for self-improvement; the world highlights just the opposite. Laziness. Carelessness. Undisciplined.

In his book Mastery, author Robert Greene states this: “Be relentless in your pursuit for expansion. Whenever you feel like you are settling into some circle, force yourself to shake things up and look for new challenges…”

Others may consider them with disdain and criticize their approach. Therefore, weigh up other people’s opinions carefully without allowing it to hinder your plans.

You will make quite a few people around you uncomfortable. Individuals who don’t share your viewpoints will criticize and complain. To compensate for their own shortcomings, people may impose their shortsighted observations on you.

How to Become Relentless

1. TAKE Complete Responsibility for Your Results

2. STOP Looking for Secrets and Shortcuts to Success

3. STOP Your “Stories” – No More Excuses

4. DO THE WORK Necessary to Make Progress

5. USE Failure to Your Advantage

6. NEVER Become Overwhelmed by Obstacles

Every day, push yourself beyond the limiting beliefs you created in your own mind. Challenge yourself repeatedly. This will make you uncomfortable.

Get used to being uncomfortable. You WILL NOT grow unless you push yourself beyond your limits. That’s how you grow. By pushing your boundaries and expanding them beyond what you’re accustomed to.

Think about it: If you are doing the same thing over and over again you do every single day, why would anything in your life change? When you never take on anything harder than your day to day routine, why would anything in your life change?

Most people’s lives become a hot pile of stagnant mess because they never push themselves beyond their comfort zone. They never have clarity in their lives.

Excellence must be pursued in order to have an exceptional life. In order to experience the joy of success a person has to develop the discipline of self-mastery, controlling their emotions along the way.

Get comfortable being uncomfortable.

Do the work necessary. You can make your future what you want.

Be relentless!
