Can You Make Money with Clickbank? My Two Cents Worth

One of the questions people ask frequently is Can you make money with Clickbank? One reason for this is Clickbank has a reputation for being a major player in the affiliate marketing arena.

Therefore, many are wondering if Clickbank has the right platform that will help them to learn how to make money online with affiliate marketing.

Make no mistake about this fact: Affiliate programs are one of the main ways that top earners online are making their money.

One of the ways that many affiliates have earned substantial profits is through Clickbank University.

What is Clickbank University?

Clickbank University is a training platform that teaches people how to become a successful affiliate or vendor with Clickbank.

Basically, with this platform, you have two options; learn how to sell your own products on Clickbank or learn how to promote products through affiliate marketing.

The training at CBU will teach you how to make money with your knowledge if you are an expert in a certain field by becoming a Clickbank vendor.

For many, creating their own digital product can be intimidating. However, Clickbank University breaks down how an everyday person can create a digital course and eBooks and earn a very comfortable living.

For those who do not want to create their own product, the affiliate training at Clickbank University will teach you how to sell Clickbank products successfully and earn commissions doing so.

Clickbank University: Scam or For Real?

Clickbank University is not a scam or just another fly-by-night cheap product that promises the moon and the stars without delivering.

They do not teach you how to throw up some crappy website in one weekend and drive garbage traffic to it hoping to make a couple of measly bucks now and then.

Many online marketers who have implemented the training and use the tools to their full advantage have experienced great results with Clickbank University.

In the past it was hard to become a successful Clickbank vendor and this platform helps people to avoid all the common pitfalls and failures when it comes to selling your own digital product(s).

The creators of Clickbank University, Adam Horwitz and Justin Atlan have done a good job at presenting a course that can help aspiring marketers to build an affiliate marketing business.

My Areas of Concern

One of my areas of concern is that Clickbank has a reputation in the affiliate marketing industry for selling products that aren’t good quality.

Many affiliates have voiced concern about the large number of products that are spammy or just outright trash.

It seems as though anyone can write an ebook and get it published in only a few days on Clickbank.

The quality of published affiliate programs in the Clickbank marketplace is a testament to the weak process for approving products on the platform.

The powers that be at Clickbank seem to be really determined to get as many products on their platform as possible without much concern about quality.

Here Come the Upsells!

Another area I’m not happy with is that they try and sell you their website builder, Clickbank Builder 2.0, which is a whopping 2 payments of $297;

Either way you pay will give you lifetime access to this useful tool.

$297 dollars is too expensive for a drag and drop website builder, especially if you are a “newbie” and just starting out. The problem is they don’t tell you this when you first sign up.

What they also don’t tell you is the training at CBU 2.0 mainly focuses on using the ClickBank drag and drop website builder. What this means is you need to purchase it in order to follow along with many of the modules.

If you don’t purchase it, following along with the training and trying to implement what is taught will be much more difficult, and as a “newbie”, you don’t want to start off with any disadvantages.

Along with the CB Site Builder up-sell, they also have the $97 Advanced Masterclass up-sell. The Advanced Masterclass goes into more detail on how to implement the resources in Clickbank University.

Actually, in my opinion, a really good idea would be to include the Advanced Masterclass with the $47 monthly fee.

Another upsell is the CBU ToolKit. Clickbank, by means of their affiliate links, will direct you to purchase some necessary items to run your business.

Again, as a new online marketer, it’s critical to watch your expenses as you endeavor to build an online business. The problem is if you don’t get these tools, you’re at a great disadvantage.

What About the Website Builder?

There seems to be a potential limitation with their website builder: you are limited to promoting Clickbank products, and for this reason I wouldn’t buy it.

Unless you are going to promote Clickbank products ONLY the website builder would certainly fit your needs.

You really want to be careful here: limiting your business to just Clickbank products in the long run can hinder your growth and your revenue.

As an affiliate marketer, you want to use a platform that will allow you to promote any product you choose, not just products from one platform.

You want the freedom to promote whatever you want online.

I’m also not a big fan of the content being “locked”. When you pay your membership fee, you have to go through each module one at a time, in order.

While most “newbies” won’t mind this, more experienced marketers really would prefer having access to all the modules at one time, so they can go to whatever module the choose to.

The problem with CBU 2.0, in my opinion, is that the training on the affiliate marketing side is lacking, even outdated in some instances.

You get “decent” training here on how to become an affiliate marketer but it’s not on the same level as the training to become a product creator, or vendor.

I have found a much better platform for teaching people how to become successful affiliate marketers is at Wealthy Affiliate.

Traffic Issues

Another disadvantage I’ve noticed with Clickbank University is that the primary focus when it comes to traffic is on paid methods.

Facebook Ads are discussed as a paid traffic source as well as driving traffic from Instagram.

There are free social media marketing strategies that are available but are not covered at Clickbank University. Paying for traffic as a “newbie” is another area of expense you really have to watch out for!

Search Engine Optimization really isn’t covered, and neither is content marketing.

Content marketing is HUGE and every affiliate marketer should learn how to write good content and how to research keywords, otherwise you’re cheating yourself out of learning a very valuable skill.

It’s quite possible, when you tally up all of your expenses, to invest anywhere from $600 to $800 ( maybe more than that ) in your first year at Clickbank University before you ever see one red cent in profit.

The bottom line is this: Clickbank University 2.0 is a legitimate platform with good online resources and real coaches.

Clickbank University is NOT a scam.

My Two Cents Worth

If you want to make money online by promoting other people’s products by learning how to become an affiliate marketer, then ClickBank University 2.0 is NOT for you.

My thought is that a platform like Wealthy Affiliate would is a better fit in that regard.

However, if your primary interest is in creating and selling your own digital product such as programs, online courses, eBooks, and membership sites, then Clickbank University 2.0  is for you.

My conclusions are as follows: Clickbank University is really designed for marketers who want to create a digital product.

Although it’s true that beginners can learn internet marketing concepts using Clickbank University, the lack of step by step guidance on some of the modules will leave many “newbies” very frustrated.

My observation: the best people for Clickbank University are intermediate to advanced internet marketers with a working knowledge of affiliate marketing and SEO who want to create and sell their own digital products.

If you are learning for the first time how to become an affiliate marketer, or an intermediate marketer who isn’t earning what you want to be earning, then you should definitely check out Wealthy Affiliate.

Get a solid foundation with internet marketing, and then if you want to create your own digital product, work with Clickbank University.

That’s my two cents worth…

  1. i have tried so many programs. I did not get to see money coming in. Instead, money going out from sign ups, monthly plans and buying books. There must be a missing link. Will come click be a different one? I do not want to lose money anymore again. If it does brings me money, then losing a little at first make sense.

  2. Does Clickbank University teach you how to go after good quality programs to recommend as an affiliate? I realize it is important if you want to keep your trust with your audience. On top of that, I’d be concerned about chargebacks if I am promoting a product from click bank that has a high refund rate.

    • Hey Jessie,

You REALLY have to search well to find good quality products on Clickbank.

When you look at the product profile, if the GRAVITY is low, that means it’s a crappy product and the possibility of chargebacks is high.

If the gravity is HIGH, that means you’re promoting a good product and the chance of chargebacks is low.

I can’t emphasize enough the need to really research a Clickbank product before you promote it.

Thank you for reading my post.

  3. Hi Howard,

I have registered with Clickbank as an affiliate about a year ago and never used them.  I go busy with other things.  I decided to look into Clickbank a bit more and find your review very informative.  One thing I hate are Upsells.  I was considering doing their course, but it seems like it will be a waste of time.  I will never use their website builder.  I am glad you explained the limitations.  You saved me a ton of time.

I want to create many streams of income using various different affiliate programs and networks.  I had a quick look at your Wealthy Affiliate review and this seems like a really good platform.  All I want to know are there any upsells at all and do I need to provide my credit card details when I sign up as a free member?

Will I be able to generate many different streams of income using the Wealthy Affiliate products?

Thanks for an excellent Clickbank review!

    • Hey Rika,

Thank you for taking the time to read my post.

You have come to the right conclusion regarding Clickbank.

As far as Wealthy Affiliate is concerned, there are 0 upsells – as a member myself I can say that with certainty.

What I would recommend is this:

      1) Become a member of Wealthy Affiliate and create your first website through their platform.

      2) Go through the training – do not skip around

      3) Continue to apply what you are learning to your ONE website – get that one site rock solid FIRST, then create another website and apply all the information you learned. Since and repeat.

When I first started with Wealthy Affiliate I was in the “multiple streams of income” mindset. I’ve learned that there are many members at Wealthy Affiliate who make great money with just ONE website.

There are also members who make outstanding money with multiple websites as well.

I have found that it’s best to FOCUS on ONE website at a time if you want multiple streams of income. Each website is a income stream. You want each website to be fully optimized to get you the best results possible.

That’s what Wealthy Affiliate does best!

  4. Hi Howard, great explanation for Clickbank. Me myself signed up the clickbank  fee months ago and found out it is not for me either. Find it quick hard to navigate too. But I didn’t know they are more for digital and ebook. I also been to many ads from  Facebook, which they lured you in with free webinar and start charging your money after. I will check out the Wealthy Affiliate you recommended, thanks for the article

  5. Very well written review.  I to have taken a close look at Clickbank University but at the end of the day found quite a bit more value at a better price with Wealthy Affiliate.  As for Clickbank.  You are also right that many of the products are poor or spam-my.  However if you do your homework you can find some real gems that can make you a lot of money.

    • Hey Dale,

Thank you for taking the time to read my post.

You are correct – you really have to dig deep to find some really good offers in Clickbank. If you find one or two, I certainly would use them as much as possible.

I wish you much success in your online business.
